Martin Petersen is an expert on China and a retired senior executive with the CIA. He has written extensively about Asia and national security issues, and City of Lost Souls is his first novel. It is set in Shanghai in the 1930s, a critical period in China and one in which Shanghai was at the center of things. A China scholar, Petersen has a Master of Arts in Asian Studies with a concentration in modern China, and he has long been fascinated by Shanghai's rich history. In fact, his collection of books, maps, and articles on the city comes to over 600 items. City of Lost Souls is a mystery and fiction, but fiction set against actual events. Petersen lives in the Texas Hill country where he continues to read widely, collect Shanghai memorabilia, and savor a Bombay Gin martini.
