Matthew Alfs is the author of the popular nature-based novel, Diary of a Country Herbalist (2017), as well as of the reference book, 300 Herbs: Their Indications & Contraindications (2003), and the gorgeously illustrated regional plant guide, Edible & Medicinal Wild Plants of the Midwest (2013; rev. ed., 2020). Matthew has been a life-long student of both nature and health, but his formal education took place at Wild Rose College of Natural Healing and the American Academy of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine. He has been a clinical herbalist since 1997 and has seen over 10,000 different patients since that time. Since the year 2000, he has delivered over 300 lectures to a large variety of institutions and associations, has taught herbal medicine at two different universities and two different colleges, has founded his own distance-education program in herbal studies (www.midwestherbalstudies.com) based upon a 1500-page curriculum on herbal medicine that he wrote, has been featured on both television and radio, and has been published in over a dozen different journals and magazines. In his spare time, Matthew enjoys nature exploration, outdoor photography, wild-foods foraging, reading, and romance.
