Michael Dorn is the Executive Director of Safe Havens International, Inc. (Safe Havens), a non-profit campus safety center whose analysts have worked in more than two dozen countries. During his career spanning nearly four decades, Mr. Dorn’s work has taken him to Canada, Honduras, India, Israel, Kenya, Mexico, Mozambique, South Africa, Trinidad-Tobago, the U.K. and Vietnam. Mr. Dorn has provided post-incident assistance for seventeen active assailant and targeted school shootings in Canadian, Mexican and U.S. K12 schools and served as a key member of the the authoring team for the IS 360: Preparing for Mass Casualty Incidents: A Guide for Schools, Higher Education, and Houses of Worship training for the United States Department of Homeland Security as part of the 2013 White House School Safety Initiative. Mr. Dorn has authored and co-authored 27 previous books on school safety and emergency preparedness including Innocent Targets – When Terrorism Comes to School, the 450 page Jane’s Safe Schools Planning Guide for All Hazards and Staying Alive – How to Act Fast and Survive Deadly Encounters. A powerful presenter, Mr. Dorn has delivered hundreds of keynote presentations at professional conferences for audiences of up to 3,500 participants from Virginia to Vietnam and from Toronto to Trinidad-Tobago. During his 25-year public safety career, Mr. Dorn served as: • Police Officer, Corporal, Sergeant and Lieutenant, Mercer University Police Department • Chief of Police for the Bibb County Public School System in Macon, Georgia • School Safety Specialist for the Office of the Governor – Georgia Emergency Management Agency • State Antiterrorism Planner and later as the Lead Program Manager for the Terrorism Division of the Georgia Office of Homeland Security. • In addition to his 25-year public safety career, Michael has served as the Senior Analyst for Public Safety and Emergency Management for Jane’s. A graduate of the 181st Session of the FBI National Academy at Quantico, Virginia, Mr. Dorn has a BA degree with a double major in history and political science from Mercer University and a master’s degree from the Mercer University School of Business. Mr. Dorn was awarded a fellowship from Georgia State University to ravel to Israel for 14 days of advanced antiterrorism training and briefings from the Israel Police, Israeli Defense Forces and Israeli intelligence personnel as a participant in the Georgia International Law Enforcement Exchange Program.
