I worked on two books with Russell Poole. The last one and final word from Russell Poole prior to his death is Chaos Merchants. Russell and I were continuing to work on the case. We boiled our investigation down to 45 Tupac murder facts. We had been secretly meeting with an Assistant District Attorney and he was interested in reopening the cases. He needed a homicide investigator. I attended a Leadership LA (I am a graduate) event where Sheriff Jim McDonnell was speaking and I asked him to get us a homicide investigator. He gave me the number of his assistant and I called and arranged the meeting. The meeting was set for three weeks from that date. As we awaited for this day to arrive we continued investigating. We discovered that an off-duty sheriff had let the shooters into the club on the night Suge Knight was shot at the 1Oak nightclub. The day before our meeting Russell received a telephone call from the Homicide Investigator asking what we were going to talk about. Russell responded, "One thing I want to know about is the off-duty sheriff that let the shooters into the club the night Suge was shot and dropped them off at the airport the next day." The Homicide Investigator was stunned. He asked, how Russell found out. "So it is true?" "Yes, it is true." This changed the entire nature of the meeting and the Homicide Investigator said, "This is now a cop thing. Don't bring Carlin to the meeting, come alone and bring everything you have on these cases." So Russell went to that meeting alone. On August 19, 2015 Russell Poole was meeting with the Sheriff's to get them on board to reopen the cases. In that meeting Russell suffered a massive heart attack and died mysteriously. I believe he was murdered. I released the rough manuscript of Chaos Merchants the very next day, just to be safe. RUSSELL'S FINAL WORDS ON THE CASES ARE PUBLISHED IN "Chaos Merchants."
