Michael R. Meacham, J.D. (University of Kansas), M.P.H. (University of Kansas School of Medicine / Wichita State University), Associate Professor, Department of Healthcare Leadership and Management, at the Medical University of South Carolina. Mr. Meacham has an extensive background in development, enactment and implementation of public policy as well as in leadership and management of healthcare organizations. He served 8 years in the Kansas House of Representatives, having been elected while a law student in 1976, 2 years after his graduation from Wichita State University. In 1998 Mr. Meacham left his legal practice in Kansas to become Director of Health System Development for Connecticut’s Office of Health Care Access where he led administrative improvements in that state’s Certificate of Need Law and other regulatory reforms affecting health services organizations. In March 2001, Mr. Meacham was named Vice President for Integrated Health Services at Eastern Connecticut Health Network, with responsibility for multiple healthcare units including administrative and clinical personnel, leading the successful implementation of a 2-campus hospitalist system, in addition to other responsibilities. He was named an Associate Professor at The Pennsylvania State University in July 2003. As an instructor and as a student of health care, Mr. Meacham’s interests are in strategic planning for health care organizations, management, leadership, health policy and predominately with the development of students as young professionals. Mr. Meacham joined the Medical University of South Carolina faculty in July 2010 as Associate Professor of Health Leadership and Management where he teaches in both the Doctor of Health Administration and the Master of Health Administration programs. Because of his close work with students in professional development, Mr. Meacham was nominated for MUSC Foundation’s 2014 Teaching Excellence Award in the Educator-Mentor: Clinical Professional Category.
