Michael Scheeringa MD

As a psychiatrist and child & adolescent psychiatrist since 1993 at several academic medical centers, Michael S. Scheeringa, MD has worked on trauma and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) with an additional specialization in very young children. Born in Texas, raised and educated in Indiana, and settled in New Orleans. He has worked at Louisiana State University, Kennedy Krieger Center (Baltimore), and the final 24 years at Tulane University School of Medicine. At Tulane, he was the inaugural holder of the endowed Venancio Antonio Wander Garcia IV MD Chair of Psychiatry. As the PI on five federal research awards, he focused on assessment methods, neurobiological correlates of PTSD, treatment development, and parent-child dynamics. His measures or techniques have been translated into over 10 languages. He has probably performed or supervised the assessment and treatment of more very young trauma-exposed children than anyone in the world. He left a tenured position and an endowed chair in 2022 to have more time to investigate, write, and stanch the flow of ideology at close quarters. He also runs Scheeringa Mind Company LLC to develop a new kind of mental health app.
