Mike Harmon has focused on distressed companies and restructuring situations for more than thirty years. He spent 21 years as an investment professional in the special situations group at Oaktree Capital Management in Los Angeles. There he executed private equity and special situations transactions involving over 50 companies. He is currently the managing partner of Gaviota Advisors, LLC, in Manhattan Beach, CA, where he advises and invests in small- to medium-sized companies. He is also a lecturer at Stanford University’s Graduate School of Business where he teaches a course on financial restructuring. He is the author of The Financial Restructuring Tool Set: How to Fix Your Broken Balance Sheet from Columbia Business School Press. Over the course of his career, Harmon has served as a member of the board of directors for 20 organizations in a broad range of industries and causes. He currently serves as a board member for KCRW Radio, a nonprofit media organization based in Santa Monica. He is an executive fellow at Harvard Business School, where he teaches a module on negotiations. He has also served as a guest lecturer within various courses at Stanford Graduate School of Business, Harvard Business School, Harvard Law School, Stanford Law School, Southern Methodist University, and Boston College in the areas of corporate restructuring, private equity, and negotiations. He holds an MBA, with distinction, from Harvard Business School and a BA, with distinction, in economics from McGill University.
