From a childhood career of dancing on American Bandstand to serving in Viet Nam as a 19-year-old “Combat Field Medic,” Millard Farmer worked briefly as an aerodynamics machinist building two valves used on Apollo 11. Hungry for adventure, he turned to hitchhiking in 1969, traveling through 60 countries on 5 continents surviving as a photojournalist and graphic artist. Beginning in the mid-1980s, a 10-year, 150,000-mile mountain bike journey culminated his tireless pursuit for excitement and inspiration. Settling in Costa Rica at the turn of the century and spending more time at home than on the road these days, decades of magnificent memories of traveling on a whim and sleeping beneath the stars can be found in the author’s writings and photography websites.
