Monawar Hussain was born in Taplow, Buckinghamshire, United Kingdom. He is the son of Kashmiri immigrants who settled in Maidenhead, Berks, UK, in the late 1960s. Monawar had originally sought a career in business, establishing a hugely successful petrol retailing business and an international trading company. Whilst operating his business, he read Theology (majoring in Islam and the West) at the University of Oxford. Following the sudden illness of his mother and her subsequent passing away in his final year of study, he decided to train as an Imam under the tutelage of the late Sheikh Zaki Badawi KBE, GCFO (1922-2006) and dedicate himself to public service. Monawar also holds an MA in Abrahamic Religions from the University of London. Monawar was the first Muslim Tutor appointed at Eton College, Windsor, in 2004. He has founded The Oxford Foundation, the United for Peace initiative and also serves as the Muslim Chaplain at the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. He is an Honorary Research Fellow at the University of Birmingham. His passion is the spiritual life and developing understanding between the world's diverse faith communities.
