Jonathan was educated at Uppingham School and Birmingham University Medical School, graduating in 1983. He joined the Army and served for 19 years, with postings in Germany, Northern Ireland, USA, Iraq, Congo and Kosovo. He was parachute trained and provided surgical support for UK Special Forces. After leaving the Army he was a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Frimley Park NHS Foundation Trust from 1999-2020, specialising in all aspects of hip surgery as well as trauma management. He shoots regularly at Bisley and has represented Hampshire, England and Great Britain. He is married and has four grown-up children and two grandchildren. He has now retired from NHS practice and lives in Norfolk where he grew up. He continues to see and treat private patients at Spire Clare Park Hospital in Surrey. He injured his hip parachuting in 1996. Eventually he accepted it needed sorting out and he underwent a hip replacement in November 2021. Following a full recovery from that operation, he went on to have the left hip replaced in February 2024, fortunately with just as good a result. Hip Expectations seems to be a popular and well-reviewed aid for prospective hip patients. Special Cases is the book Jonathan is most proud of and gives the reader an insight into his varied, interesting and fulfilling career.
