Born in 1932 in mandated Palestine, Muhammad came to the U.S. for education. He earned a Ph.D. from the University of Florida. He taught at Jacksonville University in Florida and the University of Jordan before moving to Birzeit University in the Occupied West Bank as professor, then dean, then Vice-President for Academic Affairs. He was the first Director of the Council for Higher Education in the West Bank and Gaza. In 1983, after a sabbatical as Visiting Scholar at Harvard University, he was barred by Israeli authorities from returning to his homeland.
