“What happens next?” Inspired by the response of many readers of The Dharma Expedient, Neville Sarony has turned a one-off into The Max Devlin series with Devlin’s Chakra and The Chakrata Incident. The action-packed political thrillers follow Devlin, an Anglo-Irish major of the Royal Gurkha Rifles, across Bhutan, Hong Kong, Nepal, North India, Sikkim and Tibet as he fights to free people from geopolitical turbulence and religious conflict. Neville draws on his experience and knowledge of the people, language, culture and geography of the Himalayan region. He served in the 7th Gurkha Rifles in Malaya; then read law at the London School of Economics before he was called to the Bar of Gray’s Inn in June 1964. After a stint at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, Neville, with his wife Bimala Dewan, went on an escapade in the Far East. Making home in Nepal in 1965, he set up a law practice and she a beauty salon in the Valley of Kathmandu. Their adventure is recounted in his memoir, Counsel in the Clouds. A practising QC based in Hong Kong, Neville has for over 50 years fought for clients from the remotest Magistrate’s Court in Hong Kong to the Privy Council in London. An advocate with a flair for languages, he has defended every serious offence, notably at the Old Bailey. He is also a specialist in medical negligence claims. Neville speaks English, French, German, Nepali and Spanish and is a noted jazz pianist vocalist, and a popular public speaker. When not advocating or writing, he sails around the islands of Hong Kong or chills at home in Spain. He is a trustee of the Nepal Umbrella Foundation which rescues victims of human trafficking in the landlocked country. Neville is a member of Asia Pacific Writers & Translators (APWT).
