Born in London’s East End as Neville Chamberlain was about to hand over the Prime Minister’s baton to Winston Churchill at the start of the Second World War, I had only two ambitions from as early as I can remember: to be a world champion boxer and/or a prolific author. Brittle wrists quickly torpedoed my boxing ambitions, and so I started to write about sport ... and I have (he said modestly) produced a tidal wave of words, books, television and video scripts and columns and blogs galore. I had an idyllic 45 year marriage to Eileen that produced two children in Lisa and Michael, who have in turn given me four grandchildren. On my first night out as a widower I met Jackie Wright, and we have been laughing together but living apart for coming up ten years. Jazz and classics loving, out of the closet as a Tottenham supporter and a walking, talking record book on all sports, I always put down as my main hobby: ‘Writing, writing and writing.” I have 100 books to my name to prove that I enjoy my hobby. In my near 60-year writing career, I have had published more words than Shakespeare and Dickens combined, travelled more miles than Columbus and Dickens put together, and been involved in more television production hours than John Logie Baird; all with a modicum of talent.
