Omar H. Ali is Professor of Comparative African Diaspora History and Dean of Lloyd International Honors College at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Selected as the 2016 Carnegie Foundation North Carolina Professor of the Year, he is a historian of the global African Diaspora specializing in independent political movements in the United States, Islam in the Indian Ocean world, and black resistance to slavery in Latin America. A graduate of the London School of Economics and Political Science, he received his Ph.D. in History from Columbia University. His latest book, Malik Ambar: Power and Slavery Across the Indian Ocean, was published by Oxford University Press.
