Øyvind Flatnes is both a historian and black powder shooter - a background which is perfect for writing books on the practical use of black powder firearms. He has written two books on the subject of historical firearms, as well as numerous articles and contributions in magazines and other books. The contents of his articles and books are based on historical research and own experiences on the shooting range. After serving as a rifle squad leader in the coast artillery branch of the Norwegian Royal Navy, Flatnes began studying history and media science at the University of Bergen. His master thesis in medieval military history from 2005 entitled The Leidang in Operational Service analyzed the tactical use of the public levy of free farmers in the armies of medieval Norway. His first black powder book was published in Norway the same year. His latest book From Musket to Metallic Cartridge: A Practical History of Black Powder Firearms was published in November 2013 (March 2014 in the US).
