Paul A. Lynn obtained his BSc(Eng) and PhD degrees from Imperial College London. After several years in the electrical/electronics industry he lectured at Imperial College and the University of Bristol. In the 1980's he became fascinated by renewable energy and in 1993 was asked by publishers John Wiley & Sons to start a new international journal "Progress in Photovoltaics", which he edited for 15 years. In 2003 Paul designed and built a 6.2 metre solar-powered catamaran "Solar Flair I" in which he and his wife Ulrike made the first-ever solar voyage along the entire River Thames from Gloucestershire to London. Since then he has written a trilogy of books on renewable energy, published by Wiley: "Electricity from Sunlight", "Onshore and Offshore Wind Energy", and "Electricity from Wave and Tide". Paul has recently branched out from technical books into more general themes about Britain's industrial revolution and its great engineers. He has written two books about the Stevenson family of Scottish lighthouse engineers, published by Whittles Publishing: "The Lighthouse on Skerryvore" (2015) and "Scottish Lighthouse Pioneers" (2017). In 2019 Whittles published his title "World Heritage Canal: Thomas Telford and the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct", which covers Telford's life from childhood to the time when he became an internationally famous canal engineer, placing it in its social and historical context. The book reflects Paul's love of narrowboats and the English canals which he and his wife explored in their spare time for over 25 years.
