Paul Giles was born in London in 1957 and grew up in Brentwood, Essex. He was educated at Oxford University and subsequently worked at the University of Staffordshire, Portland State University in Oregon, the University of Nottingham and the University of Cambridge, where he was University Lecturer in American Literature between 1999 and 2002. From 2002 to 2009 he was Professor of American Literature at Oxford University, and also served as President of the International American Studies Association (2005-2007). In 2010, he moved to Australia, where he is now Challis Professor of English at the University of Sydney. He is also currently president of the International Association of University Professors of English.
