Paul Ninian Sloane was born in Johnstone, Scotland in 1950 and was brought up in Blackpool in the north of England. He read Engineering at Trinity Hall, Cambridge. He joined IBM where he worked in manufacturing, sales and marketing. He became MD of database leaders Ashton-Tate and then was VP International for MathSoft Inc before becoming CEO of Monactive. He is the leading author of books of lateral thinking puzzles, many co-written with Des MacHale. He also writes on innovation, creative thinking and leadership. As a student he was a bingo caller on Blackpool North Pier. He gives talks and workshops. He has done stand-up comedy. He appeared on the TV quiz show Eggheads. For 10 years he was the keyboards player in the group, the Fat Cats. He is married with three grown-up daughters and lives in Camberley, Surrey.
