Paul Turke received a PhD in anthropology from Northwestern University in 1985, an MD from Michigan State University in 1996, and he completed a residency in pediatrics at The University of Michigan in 1999. He has since been in private practice as a co-owner of Turke and Thomashow Pediatrics in Dexter, Michigan. His anthropological field research on Ifaluk, a tiny atoll in the Western Caroline Archipelago of Micronesia, was focused on childcare networks, particularly the contributions of grandparents and older siblings. Their help became increasingly valuable as our children evolved to be physically helpless but mentally precocious. These themes are discussed throughout this book and reveal answers to a long list of questions that have forever puzzled and frustrated parents and pediatricians alike.
