Pere Bonnín

PERE BONNIN (Sa Pobla, Mallorca) is a journalist, writer and translator and has worked as head of the EFE news agency offices in the Federal Republic of Germany, Vienna and the United Nations (New York). Prior to these postings, he was a founding member of the editorial board of the Gran Enciclopèdia Catalana and editor-in-chief of Mundo Diario and also of the weekly Mundo. He has written a large number of books, notable amongst which are the novel Ombres de marjal (Marshland Shadows, 2000) and the poetry collection Contra vent i corrent. Poemes i gloses (Against Wind and Tide. Poems and Ballads, 2006). His book Sangre judía. Españoles de ascendencia hebrea y antisemitismo cristiano (Jewish Blood. Spaniards of Jewish Origin and Christian Anti-Semitism, 1998) has gone into four editions and has attracted the attention of critics and public alike. Notable among the literary works he has translated from English and German into Catalan and Spanish are the poetry of Ralph Günther Mohnnau and, with Josep Moll, the Catalan version of the vast work Die Balearen by the Archduke Louis Salvador of Austria (seven volumes). In 1997, the Mallorca newspaper Ultima hora awarded him the Siurell de Plata (Silver Statue) Prize and, in 2004, the Balearic Islands Government honoured him with the Ramon Llull Prize for his journalistic, cultural and literary contributions to the Balearic Islands.
