Peter Martell is a British journalist. His first book, First Raise a Flag: How South Sudan won the longest war but lost the peace, was named one of the best books of the year by The Economist, and The Spectator. He grew up on a sheep farm in Northumberland, in northern England, and began working as a newspaper reporter in Scotland. In 2005, he stuffed a rucksack and headed to Zimbabwe to learn how to string as a foreign correspondent. Since then, he has reported from more than a dozen countries.
