Renate Schulz was born in Germany and came to the United States at the age of eighteen. She holds a Ph.D. in Foreign Language Education from The Ohio State University. She retired from her professorship in the Department of German Studies at the University of Arizona in 2009, after spending almost thirty years at that institution in various academic and administrative positions. Remembering the life-changing effect of her first Peace Corps service in Nigeria (1963 - 1965), she rejoined the U.S. Peace Corps in 2011 and was sent to Mali, West Africa. Due to a military coup in that country she was evacuated in April 2012. She recently published a memoir of her time in Mali, entitled Life in Alien Territory: Memories of Peace Corps Service in Mali (Wheatmark, 2015). She spent 2013 - 2014 in Mexico as a Peace Corps Response Volunteer, teaching English in a faculty development program at the Universidad Autonoma del Estado de Hidalgo. She currently lives in Tucson, Arizona. Follow her blog on renateschulz.wordpress.com
