Robert Knapp was born and raised in mid-Michigan. He attended Central Michigan University and the University of Michigan and holds a Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in Ancient History. After positions at Colby College and the University of Utah, he spent the bulk of his career in the Classics Department of the University of California, Berkeley. When not writing, he spends time in Clare, Michigan restoring an 1888 log cabin built by his pioneering great-grandfather. His book, Clare 1865-1940, tells the early history of the town. His most recent book, Mystery Man--Gangsters, Oil, and Murder in Michigan is the story of Clare's most famous murder.
