Mr Roberto J Herrera

关于作者

Roberto J. Herrera was born in Havana, Cuba in 1949 and emigrated to the United States in 1961 along with his parents and younger sister, Liliana. He lives in Miami, Florida with his loving wife, Lourdes and a crazy mutt, Icy. His forty-five year marriage brought a wonderful pair of children—a son, Robert and a daughter, Jennifer—now married adults, and later two bright and energetic grandchildren—Roberto-Andres and Sabrina—from his son. Daughter-in-law, Barbi and son-in-law, Jeff, have brought a great deal of joy to the family. Sports such as tennis, basketball, and occasional cycling keep Roberto active, but reading and writing are his everyday rituals. Roberto teaches English composition and literature at Florida International University and holds two degrees, a master's in English (2001) and a bachelor's in Economics (1975). His master's thesis, 1984: A Synthesis of George Orwell's Life and Works, under the guidance of a superb steering committee headed by Major Professor Dr. Asher A. Milbauer and complemented by Dr. Richard Schwartz and Dr. Donald G. Watson, afforded him the opportunity to refine his research and writing skills in a setting far more challenging than the standard classroom. Before joining the FIU faculty in 2004, he retired as a computer specialist and systems analyst at the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta—Miami Branch, a career that spanned more than three decades. The author's lifelong passion is the pursuit of existential questions, such as Does God exist? Is there life after death? Why is there evil in the world? Do humans have a soul, or are we—as science insists—just biological machines shaped by evolution? Do people truly possess psychic abilities? Are near-death experiences what they appear to be? And who has the better answers to those questions: science or religion? Years of pondering these issues, along with pivotal personal experiences, led Roberto to conduct extensive research in hopes of finding satisfactory answers, and this culminated in his first book, "Common Sense Spirituality in a Secular Age" (2010), which was revised, updated, and re-titled "Reclaiming the Afterlife" (2014). The tome is a must read for the spiritual seeker. Roberto's interests are wide ranging, and he is particularly concerned with what he sees as underperforming institutions that govern our lives—politics, the corporate world, education, the entertainment industry, social media, science and religion, and more. His perspectives on those areas are vigorously conveyed his second book: "Bullshit and the Death of Common Sense."
