Roland Miller, a Chicago native, studied photography at Utah State University earning his B.F.A. and M.F.A. degrees. For 14 years, he taught photography at Brevard Community College in Cocoa, Florida. He then taught at the College of Lake County in Grayslake, Illinois for six years before becoming dean of its Communication Arts, Humanities and Fine Arts division in 2008. Miller retired as dean emeritus in 2018 to work full-time on his photography. Miller’s book, “The Space Shuttle: A Mission-by-Mission Celebration of NASA’s Extraordinary Spaceflight Program”, was published by Artisan Books in November of 2022. A book of Miller’s own images of the Space Shuttle, “Orbital Planes”, was published by Damiani Editore in the June of 2022. In 2020, Miller and Italian astronaut, Paolo Nespoli, completed a book project, “Interior Space”, collaboratively photographing the interior of the International Space Station. It was published by Damiani Editore. In 2016, Miller’s project, “Abandoned in Place”, documenting the deactivated and repurposed space launch and test facilities around the United Stated was published by the University of New Mexico Press. Miller’s photography has been exhibited at museums around the world, including the Galleria del Cembalo, Rome, Italy and the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Center, Florida. Miller’s photographs are included in numerous public and private collections, including of the Museum of Contemporary Photography, Chicago, Illinois and the NASA Art Collection, Washington, DC. Miller’s work has been featured in Smithsonian Air & Space Magazine, National Geographic UK, The New York Times, and numerous other national and international publications.
