Seung Kataii

关于作者

Seung Kataii is a refugee from Laos who grew up in the United States, where the temple was central to family life. Despite often feeling lost in translation during Lao festivals, a cherished memory is giving alms (Tahk Baht), which later inspired a deeper curiosity about Buddhist teachings. Kataii’s father, a former Theravada Buddhist monk, historian, and educator, greatly influenced his understanding of Buddhism's connection to Lao culture. From ages eleven to thirteen, Kataii spent summers as a novice monk, introducing him to Buddhist life. At twenty-five, after college, Kataii was ordained as a monk, extending his stay beyond the planned two weeks through the rainy season. During this time, Kataii learned meditation, recited Theravada Buddhist verses, and developed a profound interest in the Buddha's teachings. Nearly fifty years have passed since the Lao American diaspora began, challenges like cultural adjustments and educational barriers persist. Many younger Lao Americans may not speak the Lao language or fully understand their traditions. Through his work, Kataii aims to inspire learning, curiosity, respect, and pride in these ancestral traditions, preserving the essence of Theravada Buddhism for future generations.
