Shelley Metten M.S., Ph.D., or Dr. M, is a celebrated educator and anatomist who recently retired from the faculty of the UCLA Medical School to pursue her dream to become an expert parent educator. Now, she guides parents as they teach their children ages 5-14 about their changing bodies. Through her written materials, website, in-person appearances and social media content, she devotes herself to parent success in four areas: K = knowledge about children’s anatomy I = inspiration that parents are the best teachers D = direction through user-friendly materials S = solutions to raising kids that make informed health choices Dr. Metten is also a mother and grandmother who understands the anxiety that parents feel as they consider talking to their kids about puberty and sex, and she believes she can help by providing easy-to-understand resources. Her materials and website interaction through the Anatomy for Kids community are designed to guide parents as the conversation unfolds in their homes. Dr. M has written several books to present the topics of anatomy, puberty, sex, and more in an age-appropriate, scientific, and informative way. The I’m A Boy/I’m A Girl series is written for you, a caring parent, who wants to teach your child about the changes that approach with puberty.
