The author grew up in a time when large families were normal. He had five brothers and sisters, a stay-at-home mom and an Army sergeant for a father. Steven grew up as an Army brat, traveling from place to place, never living longer than a few years anywhere. After graduating high school, Steven went to college on a scholarship. Upon graduation, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Army. Steven lived the Army adventure for twenty years. First as an Air Defense Artilleryman. Later as a Military Intelligence officer. The Army taught Steven the value of planning and the strength of execution. He learned how to study complex things. Then how to simplify them. He learned first to understand. Then strive to be understood. Later, Steven learned to be an engineer, then an engineering manager. He helped to design and deploy systems to spot dangers and help save peoples' lives. And now he writes.
