In 1979 I became the first American social scientist allowed to do research in the PRC, where I documented the collapse of the commune system, the massive human rights abuses of the Mao years, and personally witnessed the forcible abortion and sterilization of women under the newly announced "one-child policy." The experience aroused me out of my academic slumber and led me to embark upon a career of writing and lecturing. The happy result has been the dozen books that are listed here, interspersed with public appearances in all 50 states and several dozen foreign countries and opportunities to work with both the White House and Congress on China policy. The books range from A Mother's Ordeal, in which I tell the story of one woman's fight to save her second--and illegal--child from the population control police who were determined to abort her, to China Attacks, a techno-thriller a la Tom Clancy of an attempted Chinese invasion of Taiwan. My latest is called the Bully of Asia, and deals with China's effort to overturn the current U.S.-led world order and replace it with one dominated by China. In a world bristling with dangers, only one enemy poses a truly mortal challenge to the United States and the peaceful and prosperous world that America guarantees. That enemy is China.
