Susan Hurst & Paula Elofson

Susan Elofson-Hurst and Paula Elofson-Gardine are sisters that live in the Denver Metropolitan area in Colorado. They co-wrote Rocky Flats: Order Authority, Fraud, and Coverups. After being involved in these issues since 1986, they are sharing "lessons learned" on how governmental entities and large corporations seek to side step public involvement and accountability. Susan got involved with the Rocky Flats Nuclear Weapons Facility issues after their construction company was asked to bid on a job At Rocky Flats. What they didn't say was that it would be re-roofing on a Plutonium production building. After hitting a stone wall asking what kind of hazards her employees would be exposed to, she found out more than expected. Susan was co-owner of a construction company, then worked as legal secretary, which taught her to be resourceful. Paula is a Medical Technologist, and worked executive secretarial jobs on the side. She arranged her schedule so she would be available to go to meetings at any time during the week. This drove public relations people crazy because they knew we would ask the hard questions and did not like it. The sequel is tentatively titled Rocky Flats: Institutional Failure. It will delve into past and current contamination, and health concerns associated with exposure. Areas previously designated as “no development zones” are now huge developments. Anecdotal stories of health issues have already arisen, cancers of brain and heart are only a few of the health issues of concern. Other issues include chromosome aberrations and miscarriages. Monitoring of this Superfund site was discontinued prior to the "closure" and partial cleanup that included imploding contaminated buildings including "infinity rooms" that are presently underground. The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment's monitoring was funded by the Department of Energy.
