Tae-hyok Kim grew up in North Korea when it was under Japanese rule in the 1930s. Following Japan’s surrender in World War II, he experienced the division of Korea into two separate states, North Korea and South Korea, in 1945. Seeking an education, Tae-hyok embarked on a journey to South Korea. He later joined the South Korean Army, fighting for the Republic of Korea Army (ROKA) during the Korean War, not knowing whether he was fighting against his own brothers and friends. After the war, Tae-hyok married Soonnyum Lee, and they had two children. Tae-hyok pursued his dreams and came to America, where he received an education at Brigham Young University. He worked for many companies, spending the most time at Reader’s Digest. Despite the challenges and hurdles that have come his way, Tae-hyok always has a smile on his face and keeps pushing forward with a positive attitude, embodying the enduring spirit of resilience. His friends know him as Tae (pronounced ‘Tie’).
