Tammy began her career as a 4th grade teacher in Chicago Public Schools, and transitioned to providing literacy professional development across the district. After earning her Ph.D. in Language, Literacy, and Culture at UIC, Tammy joined the education faculty at Roosevelt University. Maintaining her research in Latino literacy and culture, she directs the Dual Language Teacher Leadership graduate program and has been invited to facilitate professional development in schools. Most recently, she became a Licensed Professional Counselor which illuminated the need for trauma-responsive teaching practices in the classroom. Tammy is the author of Trauma-Responsive Literacy for Latinos and Newcomers in Pk-12, Salsa Dancing in Gym Shoes, and Dare to Respect.
