Tara Dudley is an Assistant Professor in The University of Texas at Austin School of Architecture. Her research examines the contributions of African American builders and architects to the American built environment, focusing on the antebellum and Reconstruction eras in Austin and Texas. She is the author of Building Antebellum New Orleans: Free People of Color and Their Influence (University of Texas Press, 2021), winner of the Association of American Publishers 2022 Prose Award in Architecture & Urban Planning, the 2022 Association of American Publishers PROSE Award (Architecture and Urban Planning Category Winner), the 2022 Southeast Chapter of the Society of Architectural Historians Best Book Prize, the 2022 Center for History and Culture of Southeast Texas and the Upper Gulf Coast Summerlee Book Prize in Nonfiction, and the 2024 Society of Architectural Historians Spiro Kostof Book Award.
