Sacred Space began as a website for Lent in 1999 (www.sacredspace.ie). Alan McGuckian and and Peter Scally, Jesuits in Dublin's Jesuit Communication Centre, used a simple framework to offer daily prayer. The stages of prayer have been helpful to millions of people, helping them to create moments of quiet prayer using their computers. In 1995 a print version of the daily prayers as a book was proposed by Michelle Anderson, an Australian publisher, whose initiative saw the annual volume being published in the US by Ave Maria Press, and, in Ireland, by Veritas. A smaller lent edition was published in 2007 and an Advent edition in the same year established the family of three annual print volumes that are now joined by a Kindle version. In 2008 the Irish Jesuits established Sacred Space as an apostolate independent of the Jesuit Communication Centre. the work of the new office was to develop and manage the website which is now available in many languages and continues to offer daily prayer to thousands on screens and pages.
