Timothy Shanahan

Timothy Shanahan is Distinguished Professor Emeritus at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He has been director of reading for the Chicago Public Schools, and was Visiting Research Professor at Queens University, Belfast, Northern Ireland. He is author of more than 300 publications on reading. His research explores how writing helps students learn to read and the improvement of reading achievement. He is one of the top 2% of social scientists in the world (Ioannidis, Boyack, & Baas, 2020). Shanahan is past president of the International Literacy Association. He served on the Advisory Board of the National Institute for Literacy under Presidents George W Bush and Barack Obama. He was inducted to the Reading Hall of Fame in 2007 and is a former first-grade teacher. His popular "Shanahan on Literacy" website provides lots of free information about reading.
