Tish Oney

Bestselling author Tish Oney has enjoyed a dual career as a professional jazz singer/lyric soprano and professor of voice for over twenty years. Her doctoral dissertation morphed into her first book, Peggy Lee: A Century of Song, the definitive volume on the creative output of this American music icon. This 2020 book was named a bestseller by publisher Rowman & Littlefield among their Arts and Culture titles earning the coveted starred review from Library Journal. Oney’s second book, Jazz Singing: A Guide to Pedagogy and Performance (Rowman & Littlefield 2022), was written from Dr. Oney’s decades of experience as a working singer and voice teacher. This groundbreaking book fills a void in jazz voice pedagogy literature and bridges the gap between many genres by equipping teachers and singers to correctly navigate resonance, articulation, voice science, voice hygiene, vocal health, vocal improvisation, microphone technique, and expression in a manner consistent with jazz style. Dr. Oney presents her revolutionary Mix Continuum which assists singers and teachers in determining the proper vocal mix for a given pitch and vowel combination in order to maintain both healthy singing and authentic style. She also incorporates extensive discussion about approaches and techniques used by the greatest jazz singers in history, guiding the reader toward practical learning from those masters of the genre. A former music professor at seven universities, Oney earned a DMA from the University of Southern California’s Thornton School of Music, an MM from Ithaca College School of Music, and a BS from Cornell University. She has performed as headlining soloist with symphonies, big bands, and chamber ensembles as a world-touring musician, composer, arranger, conductor, and musicologist.
