Tom Alsop was born in Indianapolis, Indiana. He is married, has two children and three grandchildren.Tom loves to teach Spanish, write supplemental materials for Spanish class and travel to Spanish-speaking countries. He holds a BA in Spanish Literature from Marian University and an MA in Spanish Literature from Indiana University. Tom has studied at Javeriana University in Bogotá, Colombia. Tom's wife, Jill, is also a Spanish teacher. His son, Dan, and Dan's wife, are both Spanish professors. Tom has taught at the middle school, high school and college levels over his fifty-six year teaching career. He has taught in Wayne Township at the Lynhurst Middle School and Ben Davis High School. Tom has spent twenty years on the adjunct Spanish faculty at Butler University. His teaching awards have included: the Rockefeller Fellowship, the Lilly Teacher Creativity Fellowship, Ben Davis High School Teacher of the Year, Wayne Township Teacher of the Year, Top 10 Finalist - Indiana State Teacher of the Year, ACTFL Nelson Brooks Excellence in the Teaching of Culture Award, IFLTA Teacher of the Year Award and the Indiana AATSP Teacher of the Year. His latest awards include induction into the Indiana AATSP Salón de la Enseñanza y Servicio and the Founders Award, Central States Conference on the Teaching of Foreign Languages - for his leadership and promotion in the field of world languages. Tom's leadership and involvement in world languages have included two terms as President of the Indiana AATSP, President of IFLTA, President of National AATSP Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica for HS Spanish Students, Executive Council Member - AATSP Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica for HS Students - nineteen years. He also served as a Member of the Central States Board of Directors. Tom has made some four-hundred fifty presentations during his career. Tom has published numerous articles over the years on world language pedagogy. He has been writing supplemental materials for students of Spanish and French for thirty-seven years. Tom has created more than four-hundred books, videos and posters - ideas that cover a wide array of vocabulary, grammar and culture topics. His works also include Spanish short stories and short novels. Over the years Gessler, J. Weston Walch, NETC, Macmillan, Carlex and Teacher's Discovery have published Tom's teaching materials. Tom has created and directed thirty-two Spanish Teacher Summer Immersion Programs for Spanish Teachers that have included programs in San Luis Potosí, México, Guadalajara, México, Madrid, Spain and Havana, Cuba. This summer will be Tom's thirty-fourth program. Tom has an Apple Podcast called Tom's World Language Café.He interviews teachers and leaders in the field of world language learning. He has been doing this radio show for ten years. Tom has his own company, Tom's Creative Teaching Materials & Workshops. He does workshops for world language teachers at schools or online via Zoom. He often exhibits teaching materials at state, regional and national conferences on world languages.
