Get excited for school with these fun children’s books
Ready or not, back to school is upon us and these fun and reassuring children’s books are perfect for making the transition to new classrooms and meeting new kids. Excited, nervous, or both, new and returning students will find much to love—and relate to—in these stories.
This cute board book is perfect for little ones starting preschool or kindergarten. Short, simple text and bright illustrations in bold primary colors take readers inside the classroom. There, initial shyness gives way to the joyful discovery of chairs and toys that are just the right size for little students and an environment of play and learning that they will want to return to day after day. —Seira Wilson, Amazon Editor

You can’t beat Mo Willems’ Pigeon for a laugh out loud reading experience, and this drama bird is in full swing when it comes to the topic of going to school. Whatever worries your child might have, Pigeon has them too, and his hilarious take is sure to ease any young reader’s mind. The Pigeon HAS to Go to School! has been out for a couple of years, and it’s still one of my favorite back-to-school books to recommend. (And for my fellow Pigeon fans, keep an eye out for Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Sleigh! coming out on September 5). —Seira Wilson, Amazon Editor

The giggles start early in this playful picture book. It’s the first day of kindergarten and classroom 2B is full of kids, but where is their teacher? On the desk is a steaming mug of coffee and a sandwich; on the chalkboard the kids see the words “Mr. S”—could the sandwich be…their teacher? The kids get to work doing story time and art, but still the question of Mr. S remains, until suddenly someone new arrives. The mystery is solved, but not in the way you might expect, and young readers are sure to forget all about their first day jitters and look forward to discovering who—or what—their new teacher might turn out to be…. —Seira Wilson, Amazon Editor

What a delightful way to show kids that math is not just in the classroom, but all around them! Whether it’s in the rings of a tree stump, the number of stories in a book, bowls of berries that are bigger and smaller, or the pattern of seasons—math is everywhere! With detailed illustrations and a variety of characters, What Is Math? is one of the best books I’ve seen to get kids thinking about math from a fun and exciting new perspective. —Seira Wilson, Amazon Editor

This fresh take on the first day of school tackles the topic of a first day that doesn’t go as planned. Bitsy Bat tries to fit in with the other kids but everything she does seems to be wrong and it’s all too much. It’s an upsetting first day, but her loving family reassures her that she’s a special star and shows her how she can keep that in mind during the school day. And Bitsy brings that positive attitude and courage—as well as a sweet project for helping her classmates shine their brightest too—back to school to great success. Great for any child, Bitsy Bat, School Star is particularly well suited to kids with autism who may be challenged by an environment of bright lights and noise. Additional information on autism is included in the backmatter. —Seira Wilson, Amazon Editor
