Stephen Colbert and Evie Colbert’s favorite cookbooks
Like many of us, Stephen and Evie Colbert started cooking together like never before during Covid lockdown, and family meals came to be as much nourishment for the soul as for the body. In Does This Taste Funny? the Colberts share favorite recipes and anecdotes from their home life, and the result is a cookbook that feels they’ve invited you over for a meal.
“We are so happy that our cookbook Does This Taste Funny? is out now. It’s full of family recipes as well as a few that are inspired by cookbooks that we love. Here are a few of our favorites.”—Stephen and Evie Colbert
We love Ina and all of her cookbooks. Go-To Dinners fits our family life style perfectly. I am not a good planner when it comes to weekly dinners and I love how quickly and easily these recipes come together. The asparagus cacio e pepe is so simple and so delicious; it is hard for me to eat regular asparagus now… I always want a little pecorino and parmesan melted on top! —Evie Colbert
Any book that starts with Snack Time is okay by me. Nothing Fancy is a great mix of recipes that, while they might not be that fancy, opened my eyes and mouth to anchovies and turmeric and harissa. And I’ll always be grateful to Alison for her Carmelized Shallot Jam, which I flagrantly ripped off for my red rice. —Stephen Colbert
I know eating lots carbs isn’t very popular now but boy do I love this cookbook. I have cooked from it for 40 years and my copy is so torn and tattered that I have to hold it together with rubber bands! Jane’s recipes are healthy and balanced—I love how she gives you the tip of how to turn a side dish into a full meal (hint: add some cheese!) —Evie Colbert
We were gifted this book from some friends 20 years ago, and I don’t think I’ve thanked them enough. These classic recipes are inspired by the small family restaurants of France. My go-to is Madame Laracine’s Gratin Dauphinois, which, with potatoes, cream, and cheese makes a great side dish and a reliable narcotic. —Stephen Colbert
