An Echo Show shows a split-screen of a video call between a woman, and a couple. Below their videos is a screen keyboard.

How to use Real Time Text

Real Time Text (RTT) is a feature that adds a live, real-time chat feed during Alexa calls and Drop Ins made from Echo Show devices. When RTT is on, a keyboard pops up on the screen, enabling customers to type text which appears in real time on both parties' screens. Customers can also use a Bluetooth-connected keyboard. This feature makes it easier for customers with speech impairments, or for customers who are deaf or hard of hearing, to communicate with their contacts by typing during a call.

To enable RTT on Echo Show:

  1. On your Echo Show, swipe down from the top of the screen and tap the Settings icon.
  2. Scroll down to select Accessibility.
  3. Scroll down to RTT, and slide toggle to the on position.
  4. Review the information page that explains the functionality of RTT. When complete, tap Enable.

Make a call with RTT:

  1. To make a call using RTT, first make sure you have uploaded your contacts (if you have not added your contacts, please see below). When ready, you can call your contact by name. For example, say, “Alexa, call Claire RTT.”
  2. When the call is received, you will see a keyboard appear on your screen. Type a message.
  3. As you type your message, the receiver will see your text in real time, character by character. When they respond, you will see the same.
  4. If you want to remove the keyboard so you can see more of the screen, simply tap the keyboard icon and it will slide down. To bring it back, tap the keyboard again.

Real Time Text is available on all Echo devices with a screen
