“The first year is when some of us lose our lives. The second year is when the rest of us lose our humanity.” —Xaden Riorson
Everyone expected Violet Sorrengail to die during her first year at Basgiath War College—Violet included. But Threshing was only the first impossible test meant to weed out the weak-willed, the unworthy, and the unlucky.
Now the real training begins, and Violet’s already wondering how she’ll get through. It’s not just that it’s grueling and maliciously brutal, or even that it’s designed to stretch the riders’ capacity for pain beyond endurance. It’s the new vice commandant, who’s made it his personal mission to teach Violet exactly how powerless she is–unless she betrays the man she loves.
Although Violet’s body might be weaker and frailer than everyone else’s, she still has her wits—and a will of iron. And leadership is forgetting the most important lesson Basgiath has taught her: Dragon riders make their own rules.
But a determination to survive won’t be enough this year.
Because Violet knows the real secret hidden for centuries at Basgiath War College—and nothing, not even dragon fire, may be enough to save them in the end.
The Empyrean series is best enjoyed in order.

2024年11月15日在美国发布评论Iron Flame (The Empyrean Book 2) Kindle Edition
by Rebecca Yarros (Author)
I blame Anne McCaffrey for my love of dragons and their riders. Rebecca Yarros, Violet, Xaden, and their dragons had a lot to live up to, in fact, the entirety of Pern! And Ms. Yarros does live up to Ms. McCaffrey.
Where, at times, the first book in the Empyrean felt like a young adult book that had spice added in to move it from the young adult shelf, Iron Flame is fully rooted in adult fantasy, with just the right amount of spice and the perfect measure of angst and pathos.
The relationship between Violet and Xaden sits in the center of the story, but there is so much more. We have siblings with a reason for vengeance, a hidden royal heir, jealous love rivals, and a race for a magical solution. It's all in there. All of the feels and all of the tension. The only issue I had was that about ¼ of the book could have been shaved. In the realm of fantasy and fantasy romance, many authors seem to be in a race to see who can write the longest book. Yes, SJM, JLA, and now Ms. Yarros, I am looking at all of you. Apparently, they are all racing to take the tile of the biggest book away from the Giga Codex.
That said, I am in love with the world that Ms. Yarros has created. It feels very concrete, as if I could smell the dust on the trails that the dragons and the griffins climb, the sweat under the flight leathers, and the spice of the lust that seems to be in the air. It is a real world, tangible, and fascinating.
Ms. Yarros is the new queen of the Shadow Daddy (if you don't know, go look it up). Xaden is not morally grey, so much as he is morally flexible. He is willing to burn the world... heck, he'd burn the universe for Violet, but he is also full of honor and strength.
Violet is not the paragon of virtue or the slightly insane fantasy heroine we are used to. She is very clearly, a fighter – not only of her very real enemies, but also the illness that she must overcome every day to be a rider.
One of the stand out part of Iron Flame is the dialogue. Ms. Yarros is a master of using dialogue to move the story along and to further character development effortlessly. Unless the reader takes a step back from the story (which is as difficult as climbing Everest barefoot!), it isn't easy to see the masterful techniques she utitlizes.
The plot, which at times (as I said before), is a bit overloaded, moves along as fast is possible in this height of book!
To be completely honest, I received this book as a gift (the hardback) from the husband, and also borrowed it from KU when it was available, because I needed them both to finish.
If Fourth Wing lived up to the hype, Iron Flame went beyond the hype into a completely different universe!
Complete with a masterful use of technique, a beautifully built world, and an intricate woven plot, Iron Flame, in fact the entire Empyrean series, is a modern classic that will go down in literary history with the Lord of the Rings, the Dragon Riders of Pern, and the Witchworld stories.
4.75 stars out of 5 (a .25 deduction because some of the book could have been shaved) rounded up to 4 stars out of 5

2024年11月11日在美国发布评论This second book is in this addicting fantasy series and starts with two parts and a wonderful quote in the blurb. You get sucked back into the Romantasy with Violet and Xaden as they navigate Basgiath War College as dragon riders. I appreciate the warning about the content at the beginning of the book.
Violet is still mystified by the surprise in the last book. The parts back at the war college are very political but also heartbreaking as they go from lovers back to friends and from forced proximity to enforced separation.
The second year for Violet is just as volatile as the first. Her relationship and experience are complicated this second year with Xaden; she is not there and still has targets on her back.
The back-and-forth banter and fated relationship pull this story along as they are separated this year. Violet is much more robust, and Xaden is more truthful, but they still can't get over the secrets between them. This story does get steamy.
This story's antagonist is Major Varrish, but I must discover all the whys. What is with bringing back previous characters like Violet needs one more challenge.
Their missions seem to always land them on the wrong side of the school authority, but with every risk comes a great reward or a near-certain punishment. This book gets very dark toward the end. Violet is looking bleak, and I am waiting for Xaden to rescue her.
Part one of this book ends with a new chapter in their lives.
Part two
This book is more rebellious than the last, but you still get Violet and Xaden. However, the vibes in the storyline are very different. They are still fighting for survival but in a different form.
This second year has a lot more juvenile interactions, with jealousy, anger, and miscommunication in the relationship between Xaden and Violet. The first book was primarily concerned with their survival, and this book is more about all the emotions. It reads very young adults in maturity but new adults in interactions. Their interactions with the Viscount are twisted once again, putting Violet in danger.
The love triangle goes back again in this story as an ongoing trope. I love Xaden Alpha's protective side and his excellent care in gentle interactions. He isn't in this story as much as it is mostly Violet.
The end of this story is an epic fantasy riddled with intense action, heroic moments, and amazing powers. Omg, this book ends with one heck of a twist.

2025年1月15日在美国发布评论Hoo! I need to read a very calm book after this one. Maybe just some poetry? A book about grass growing? Wonderful storytelling, emotional and physical battles well-rendered, and characters you come to care about. Plus dragons, gryphons, magic, bad guys you can really be mad at, fun sex scenes. What more could one want in a fantasy book?!

5.0 颗星,最多 5 颗星 Badassery meets vulnerability in this middle-of-series sequel
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️: Badassery meets vulnerability in this middle-of-series sequel. Book 1 set the stage and book 2 delves into the inner workings of our beloved characters, adding more depth and evolution. This book reads like a roughing out of the edges, in preparation for the momentous events to come. Whereas Fourth Wing captured my heart and soul and left me begging for more, Iron Flame ensured that I remained faithful, as we wait for the rest of the story to unfold. Warning: another cliffhanger ending without a potential release date for book 3.
I am a hardcore fan of The Empyrean, a romantic fantasy series set in a dragon rider war academy, and Iron Flame, book 2, did not disappoint in the least. I love Rebecca Yarros' writing style and all of her characters are 😘 (even the ones that you love to hate). Fast paced in some parts and slower moving in others, Yarros keeps you on edge, guessing throughout. You need to read book 1 (Fourth Wing) before reading Iron Flame, as it is a continuation of the major cliffhanger that we were dealt at the end of book 1. I was tugging my hair in frustration at times, wanting to slap some sense into some of the characters, and cheering them on for their strength and tenacity at times.
❤️: At its very core, The Empyrean is a romance series. The romantic ups and downs between Xaden and Violet is present throughout book 2 (sometimes in a deliciously frustrating way). Which bring us to...
👫: Characters & evolution: Violet and Xaden have much to learn about themselves, individually, as people and as warriors, and as a couple, and this book takes them through a myriad of emotional and physical challenges. I love that Yarros' characters can be both very strong and very vulnerable at once. I connected with Violet's vulnerable side. Both characters are flawed, which makes them relatable. Xaden is definitely in my top book boyfriends.
🗣: 1st person, present tense, from the MFC's pov (with one chapter from the MMC's p0v)
😴: Did I lose sleep over this book? YES! There were times when I just couldn't put it down
♻️: Will I read again? Absolutely. As soon as I get a new credit on Audible, I'm getting the audiobook.
🔚: Ending: Cliffhanger.
🌶: Explicit sex: Just the right amount in my opinion. Tension builds and then you get rewarded for your patience. The sexual content doesn't overpower the story but its spicy and descriptive enough for those who love the element of spice.
🤬: Language: Swearing, violent language, descriptive sex and F-Bombs
⚠️: Triggers: Death, violence, gore, torture, dismemberment, mourning
