It was the perfect quick read for me to finish in one sitting while it was raining (que hoa hoa hoaa hoa music).In this short story, Jamie and Marc find themselves stuck together in a snowstorm. They are childhood friends, sorta. Jamie is BFF with Marc’s older sister and he had a huge crush on her for forever… until she broke his heart a few months prior to the snowstorm.For a novella, the author did a fabulous job pulling me in and being invested in these characters past, present and future. I just loved how devoted Marc was to Jamie over the years and even though it took her way too long to see it, I was so happy they get their happy ending.There isn’t any open or closed door romance type scenes, but I still loved this short story so much I am giving it a 5 star rating. I feel like it could be expanded to a full length novel, and give us the open door scenes, please…. 😘

Jamie has known Marc literally his whole life. She's always had a soft spot for him & he's always been head over heels for her (even though she's clueless/in denial about it). This is your classic best friend's brother with a touch of miscommunication trope. It's a cute, quick read that's surprisingly emotional.

I thought this was an excellent little novella, but it was way too short! I would have loved a few more chapters at the end and maybe even an epilogue. 😅

First of all, the character development was great for a short story! We really got to see why Marc and Jamie have such kinetic energy…maybe Marc is a little creepy at one point, you decide! lol

Second, we really get invested in their professional and personal lives. I feel like maybe some women will really relate to Jamie here…all her worries of insecurity, not wanting to fail, avoiding relationship bc people just leave anyway, etc.. Very relatable and easy to cheer them on !

Third, I saw some mixed feelings abt the writing style. I think you have to remember the format. It was train-of-thought writing, which works well in shorts I think. It might feel like a bunch of run on sentences, but really it’s just fast paced with a few well placed adjectives and descriptors to set the stage.

The other big difference with a short story is that the author doesn’t do as much scene setting as in longer novels. She didn’t go into a description of a beautiful farm home, with a wrap around porch where wooden rocking chairs are frozen in place, now only silent observers to the chaotic storm…it’s a short story so we just have to make up all the scenery in our head and author focused on the 2 characters. So if you like to be immersed in the beautiful details of scenery and multiple characters, then the shorts might fall short for you. ;)

Cruel Winter with You is a perfect short novella for a quick, cheesy read. Though brief, I thoroughly enjoyed following Marc and Jamie's story. Ali Hazelwood has a talent for making readers smile and swoon, and I lost count of how often I was grinning while reading.

This a sweet little Christmas story. I listened to the audio book. It was well done. The couple are childhood friends who get caught in a storm and resolve old feelings. It was fairly believable and not completely instalove. If you want a quick holiday read and like Ali’s other books, you will enjoy this one.

I love this author and she does not disappoint with this story. It is an easy read about 2 people who have known one another their whole lives and the only reason they aren’t together is missed connection essentially. There is a bit of an awkward element, some vague reference to mental health and some indication of parents neglect but the story itself isn’t too serious. It is a fun read and ends on a spicy note.

Overall, I recommend reading this story. It is a great palate cleanser or just a fun holiday romance.

Ali Hazelwood’s Cruel Winter with You is an utterly charming and heartwarming read. From the very first page, I was hooked by Jamie and Marc’s undeniable connection. The narrative seamlessly weaves between the past and present, revealing the aftermath of “the incident” with perfect pacing. Every moment felt intentional, and the story unfolded beautifully, leaving me completely satisfied while still wanting more. Its shorter length only added to its magic, creating an experience I’ll revisit time and time again. This is a must-read for romance lovers!

Ali Hazelwood did it again and wrote another winner. Even though it was short, the story was very much complete. It was fulfilling and satisfying as the love story of Marc and Jamie was told. It showed their arc of the relationship together beautifully over the years. It had the great trope of best friend’s brother, though with a twist of him being younger. It was angsty. It had great tension. The deep emotions were there as they built for years upon years. The special moments of caretaking and affection were there. I loved the characters especially Marc. What a sweetheart. Overall it was just a great story, and I throughly enjoyed it.

📔 𝗧𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝘀: Best friend’s brother, he’s loved her all along, second chance-ish, snowed in.

📖 𝗦𝘆𝗻𝗼𝗽𝘀𝗶𝘀: Jamie ends up snowed in with her best friend’s brother Marc, and the forced proximity pushes them to confront their long-time attraction.

🌟 𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄: Novellas sometimes show off a writer’s weakness, or feel rushed. Ali Hazelwood wrote this one PERFECTLY. And I feel like I should shout that from the rooftops.

One of my biggest pet peeves of Ali’s work is that a lot of her MMCs are quiet and stoic. They do a lot of showing instead of telling - which is usually great but always becomes a bit too much.

Marc? Nope. He’s yelling he loves Jamie from the rooftops… and I am here for it.

I was impressed by every bit - how she wove in the past. How efficient she was. How the dialogue made me feel. Top notch novella and I hope an indication for the rest of the collection being great.

I'm not usually a Christmas book reader, but I was in the mood for some snowy Christmas romance, and this satisfied that itch. It's under a hundred pages, it's a second chance, friends to lovers and it's full of cuteness. It was a little confusing at first when it started flipping between past and present. But Hazelwood has done that in her other novellas, so it wasn't jarring, I just needed a minute to catch up. This is perfect if you want to get into the holiday spirit and you want to bump up your reading goal before the end of the year.
