Elon Musk Kindle电子书
When Elon Musk was a kid in South Africa, he was regularly beaten by bullies. One day a group pushed him down some concrete steps and kicked him until his face was a swollen ball of flesh. He was in the hospital for a week. But the physical scars were minor compared to the emotional ones inflicted by his father, an engineer, rogue, and charismatic fantasist.
His father’s impact on his psyche would linger. He developed into a tough yet vulnerable man-child, prone to abrupt Jekyll-and-Hyde mood swings, with an exceedingly high tolerance for risk, a craving for drama, an epic sense of mission, and a maniacal intensity that was callous and at times destructive.
At the beginning of 2022—after a year marked by SpaceX launching thirty-one rockets into orbit, Tesla selling a million cars, and him becoming the richest man on earth—Musk spoke ruefully about his compulsion to stir up dramas. “I need to shift my mindset away from being in crisis mode, which it has been for about fourteen years now, or arguably most of my life,” he said.
It was a wistful comment, not a New Year’s resolution. Even as he said it, he was secretly buying up shares of Twitter, the world’s ultimate playground. Over the years, whenever he was in a dark place, his mind went back to being bullied on the playground. Now he had the chance to own the playground.
For two years, Isaacson shadowed Musk, attended his meetings, walked his factories with him, and spent hours interviewing him, his family, friends, coworkers, and adversaries. The result is the revealing inside story, filled with amazing tales of triumphs and turmoil, that addresses the question: are the demons that drive Musk also what it takes to drive innovation and progress?

2023年11月13日在美国发布评论Just read Walter Isaacson's biography on Elon Musk. Isaacson is a brilliant biographer (I previously read books on Jen Doudna and Crisper/gene editing as well as one on Steve Jobs); as a biographer, he is not a "fanboy" nor a Musk hater, but paints Elon as a complex and polarizing figure, a transformative genius with major character flaws. Musk, who is only 52, has humble origins in South Africa with an abusive father, comes to the US (via Canada), then transfers to Univ of Penn and subsequently ends up in Palo Alto to become a serial entrepreneur.
At heart, he was a physics/math nerd, a video gamer, a steely risk taker with high functioning Asperger syndrome (low empathy, high IQ). He had outsized visions for humanity from early on (i.e. to go to Mars to preserve humanity, sustainable energy on earth, etc); an indomitable will to distort reality and make things happen. He was a control freak, didn't suffer fools, didn't care about others or their feelings per se. His first venture was Zip2 in the early 90s, a humble software (with map locations crossed with a business directory), then PayPal (bought by eBay). The subsequent and unlikely success of SpaceX (which created a reusable rocket to power astronauts to orbit as well as an orbiting satellite system Starlink to provide internet back on earth), then Tesla (largest maker of electric vehicles), and other ventures (SolarCity, Boring, Neuralink, Optimus). Of course, the infamous recent purchase of Twitter, the sewer of public human discourse. As distracting and obtuse as the purchase of twitter might be, access to massive datasets (500M tweets/day) together with Tesla video feeds from Autonomous cars could represent a rich source for an improved AI platform (X.AI).
The biography carefully dissects his personal life, his multiple wives, partners, and many children, extended family of cousins, etc. The book paints a picture of lack of impulse control, a desire to be in the limelight, to be in control, "rules don't apply to me", a god-complex. The many houses, private jet travel, parties into the early morning hours, and work till you drop. The book also explores Musk's political transformation from being Obama-supporting liberal dude, to a libertarian to self-serving obsession with free speech (especially with Twitter) to embracing right wing conspiracy theories. Sometimes blurring what is a joke, what is being a provocateur, to what is being hateful and abusive, to being of personal benefit! Remember, the dude is only 52, is the richest man on the planet, he is touching and driving critical and transformative areas (space travel with contracts with NASA, car production (with innovative industrial design fabs, battery facilities, active attempts at full self-driving), de facto charging standard and network, energy, emerging AI competitor to ChatGPT).
What is fascinating is that Musk has one foot in software/computers but the other foot on physical, industrial objects that moves matter! In that way, he is of a different breed than many other tech titans! I wouldn't want to be married or work for the dude or be his competitor! This is a must read biography, consider it volume 1 only as the story is unfolding in front of our eyes!

Walter isaacson way of putting toghether the chronology of the different events and narrative is superb. Some details are too much and unnecesary, most of them are key to understand the mind and branding of Elon.

Very well written to say the least. So very interesting and good to get a view into Elon that I have not had before. As disruptive as he is, it makes me want to root for him now. I had judged him only by the headlines. He's changing our world for the better. Anyone that has been able to work for him and remain loyal is admired in my eyes. I wouldn't have the strength.
