holy crap. The first book was good. But not amazing. I was expecting the same from this. I expected cheesy romance with a touch of smut to skip, drama, adventure, a predictable story in some ways….Instead I found a brilliant romance that was way better written than expected, a story that was pretty incredible in some ways, and a lot of things I REALLY really liked- including hidden gems based on old folklore and fairytales.Does this book have flaws? For sure. And I could nitpick and go through every single one, but honestly, this book won me over. I get why it’s hyped up. I get why this series is freakishly famous. And I get why it’s turned a lot of people to fantasy.Compared to a lot of the other fantasy/romance books I’ve tried this is pure gold. It’s written by someone who seems to actually know a bit about true love, who understands the complexity of relationships, and who writes multidimensionally. It’s also much better than a few of the other SJM books ive read before, which is another reason I went into it with lower expectations.I’m definitely excited to keep reading and intrigued with the story. Also this story has a “bad boy” hero done right. Meaning, at least so far, he’s actually a good person, isn’t controlling or abusive, and the bad boy is an act rather than an actual villainous personality. Hooray for non-toxic relationships! There were a few parts to skip, but I was also surprised at how few there were seeing as I’ve seen this toted by some people as “pure smut with no story”. Glad to hear they are wrong. The story is excellent, and the characters are awesome.1
