Sharifa Brown

Sharifa Brown is an author, poet, mother, wife, and entrepreneur originally from Mississippi and now living in Georgia, with her husband and their micro-preemie son, Malik, who was born at 25 weeks gestational age. With a master’s degree in Communicative Disorders, Sharifa works as a Speech Language Pathologist with a wide range of patients, from geriatrics exhibiting neurological deficits to children with speech, language, and cognitive impairments. Galvanized by the miracle of Malik’s birth and survival, Sharifa has turned her attention to writing in the hopes that her family’s experiences will not only encourage and support others, but spread awareness about the high rates of preterm births among African-American women. Her book, My Early Surprise: A Bedtime Story for Preemies, charts the highs and lows of giving birth to a premature baby and the hopes and fears of a mother. She hopes that her story will help to instil a sense of hope, self-confidence and joy in her son and perhaps in others too.
