David Lu is Professor Emeritus of History and Japanese Studies at Bucknell University. Born in Taiwan, he went through Japanese grade and high school, Chinese college, and studied at Westminster Seminary and Columbia University. His books on Japan are not ivory tower textbooks. He has maintained close contact with all strata of Japanese society, having known 17 prime ministers personally, and visited 120 business establishments. As a correspondent for a Japanese weekly Sekai to Nippon (The World and Japan) from 1972 through 2012, he traveled to all parts of Japan except Akita prefecture. The same down to earth approach is also evident in his books written in Japanese for the Japanese audience. They reflect his personal experience, including two unsuccessful run for U. S. congress.
