Mitchell M. Handelsman

Mitch Handelsman received his Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the University of Kansas in 1981. He is currently professor of psychology and a CU President's Teaching Scholar at the University of Colorado Denver, where he has been on the faculty since 1982. He served for a year (1989-1990) in Washington DC as an APA Congressional Science Fellow. He is a licensed psychologist and a Fellow of the American Psychological Association. He is faculty member in the PROBE (Professional Problem-Based Ethics) Program of the Center for Personalized Education for Professionals. Mitch has won numerous teaching awards, including the 1992 CASE (Council for the Advancement and Support of Education) Colorado Professor of the Year Award, and APA's Division 2 Excellence in Teaching Award in 1995. He has published several book chapters and over 50 articles in journals ranging from "Professional Psychology: Research and Practice" to the "Journal of Polymorphous Perversity." Mitch's major scholarship and research area is professional ethics; he has published widely in ethics and is the co-author (with Sharon K. Anderson) of "Ethics for Psychotherapists and Counselors: A Proactive Approach," and (with Samuel Knapp and Michael Gottlieb) "Ethical Dilemmas in Psychotherapy." He has served on numerous professional and community ethics committees, and is a past chair of the Colorado Psychological Association Ethics Committee and the Rose Medical Center Ethics Committee. Mitch is also a trumpet player and plays jazz and blues in the Denver area. Speaking of music, Mitch's collaborated with Charlie Burrell, a pioneer in breaking the color barrier in classical music, on his autobiography.
