Earl Smith (1939 - ) was born in Chicago, Illinois to African-American parents, who instilled in him a sense of his own worth as a human, sentient being. He joined the U.S. Air Force in 1959 and immediately discovered Ayn Rand and her Objectivist philosophy, which since has influenced much of his writings. His first book, "Only the Strong Survive: Memoirs of a Soul Survivor" with Jerry Butler, received favorable reviews from The New York Times Book Review, Ebony magazine, and the African American Literature Book Club. Now retired, Smith has worked as a reporter for The Associated Press, an Assistant Editor at Jet magazine, and a copy editor at the Chicago Defender.
