G. G. Rowley (Gaye Rowley) teaches English and Japanese literature at Waseda University in Tokyo. She has written or translated several biographies of Japanese women, most recently "In the Shelter of the Pine: A Memoir of Yanagisawa Yoshiyasu and Tokugawa Japan," by Ōgimachi Machiko, published by Columbia University Press in 2021. Her other books include "An Imperial Concubine's Tale" (Columbia University Press, 2013), Masuda Sayo's "Autobiography of a Geisha" (Columbia University Press, 2003, 2005), and "Yosano Akiko and The Tale of Genji" (Center for Japanese Studies, The University of Michigan, 2000).
