Gareth Dylan Smith is Assistant Professor of Music, Music Education at Boston University and a punkademic. His first love is to play drums. His writing and research interests include drumming, punk pedagogy, popular music education, eudaimonia and hedonia. Gareth’s books include A Philosophy of Playing Drum Kit: Magical Nexus (Cambridge University Press) and I Drum, Therefore I Am: Being and Becoming a Drummer (Routledge). Gareth is working on an album of duets titled Permission Granted, and a book about that project called Conversations at the Drums. Gareth is founding co-editor of the Journal of Popular Music Education and of Intellect book series Contemporary Music Making and Learning. He is a former board member of the International Society for Music Education, past president of the Association for Popular Music Education, and serves on the steering committee for the International Society for the Sociology of Music Education. Gareth’s musical collaborators include Stephen Wheel, Martin Urbach, Andy Krikun, Zack Moir, Victor Coelho, Dan Sheehan, Black Light Bastards, Mother Nature and Austina Lee.
